Who Are the Guardians of the Galaxy?

From Marvel’s concept art:

So who are the Guardians of the Galaxy and what can we expect from this upcoming movie?

First of all there have been a few teams to use this name.  Thanks to the concept art we know for sure who to expect.  However, with the joys of Marvel Studios don’t be shocked to see Easter Eggs referencing these previous teams.

From left to right we have Drax, Groot, Star-Lord, Rocket Raccoon, and Gamora.

Earthman Arthur Douglas is killed by Thanos (yes the big purple guy at the end of the Avengers).  Other aliens (trying to keep this as simple as possible for you all) take Douglas’s spirit and put it into a stronger body.  That new blend of body and mind is now called Drax the Destroyer.  He has the catch all super strength, speed, stamina and durability.  He likes the knives, as you can see.  He can also “track” people but best of all he can track or sense where Thanos is in the universe at all times.

Groot is the possible last of his kind.  Yes, he is a plant.  An alien humanoid plant.  Groot can use any wood to benefit him whether it be to heal himself, grow in size, enhance his strength or even controlling trees.  He’s no dumb block of wood though, Groot also wields genius level intellect.

Human Peter Quill was a NASA astronaut who is gifted with powers by the Master of the Sun.  The powers grant him abilities of an interplanetary policeman.  This policeman outfit grants him super strength, flight and the ability to travel through space.  He has a sentient spaceship known as Ship.  He has also carried various weapons over his career.  Two element guns at first and now two Kree weapons.  It is unknown which he will sling in the movie.

Rocket Raccoon

Yup.  That’s a humanoid raccoon.  Not an Earth raccoon with special powers, just an alien who is much like our own raccoon.  Just walks on two legs and speaks English and all that good stuff.  He is also a gifted pilot, warrior and leader.  None of this is as impressive as the gift of merchandise and marketing that a bad ass raccoon super hero will bring to the world and to the banks of Marvel/Disney.

Gamora is the adopted daughter of Thanos.  Yeah, something crazy will happen there.  She is also the greatest martial artist in the galaxy along with any other fighting style necessary which she pulls off with her enhanced strength speed and stamina.  She also possesses the most dangerous dagger in the galaxy, capable of cutting through any being.  Even gods.

Finally there is the man who is not on the poster, but who everyone expects to see soon in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Nova is human Richard Rider.  He is bestowed the powers of the Nova Corps, the actual galaxy spanning police force (sorry Star-Lord).    As a member of the Nova Corps Rider has super human strength, speed, durability, stamina, and the power to absorb energy fired at him, then take that energy and blast it back.  The Worldmind is in charge of the Nova Corps and later in the character’s history Richard Rider becomes the host of the Worldmind thus increasing all of his powers.  Nova has been considered street level and cosmic level of powers over his career.  He has never been an official member of the Guardians of the Galaxy, but Nova is being pushed to the front of the Marvel Universe.  Recent comics, cartoons and promotional images hint that Nova will become a larger part of the Marvel Universe, and the Guardians of the Galaxy movie is a great place for him to debut.
